Seven Clean Seas x The Conscious Two Minute Clean Up is an initiative out of Singapore to encourage people to reconnect with our planet at a time when such a connection is at risk of being forgotten. COVID19 has impacted every single person on this planet in some form or another, and it has had a similar impact on the planet itself. As the coronavirus took hold, the demand for PPE, masks, gloves and other single use plastics went up, and so where will it end up? Sadly, it will inevitably end up in our rivers and oceans.

The restrictions imposed by governments and the World Health Organisation meant that beach clean up organisations that rely on large groups of people had to come to a halt; this has meant that tons of trash has been accumulating on our beaches and shorelines without the usual efforts to ease this pressure on nature.

However, as many countries around the world slowly start to come out of strict lockdown rules and we are able to gather in small groups outside, it got us thinking about what we can do to help during this ‘new normal’?

We were so in awe of the success of the Run For Heroes campaign - run 5km, donate 5, nominate 5 - that was launched in the UK for the NHS but that very quickly went global and has now raised over 5.5M GBP, and so wanted to replicate something similar...

The rules are simple, take 2 minutes out of your day and:

PICK UP 5 PIECES OF TRASH

DONATE $5 TO SEVEN CLEAN SEAS

NOMINATE 5 FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME

Our target is just $500 SGD, which equates to 100kg of trash! But we need YOU to take part and help spread the word. So, get your gloves on, head down to your local beach, park or even street and pick up 5 pieces of trash. Take a picture, upload to Instagram + donation screenshot and tag 5 friends to do this challenge too.

V IMPORTANT: Wherever you are in the world, please make sure that if you do this challenge with friends that you are adhering to any government rules that are currently in place. So for Singapore this means no more than 5 people in a group, to ensure you are wearing a mask at all times and to practice safe distancing (keeping at least 1 metre apart). Please also wear gloves and take care to sanitise your hands thoroughly after you have safely disposed of the rubbish in the nearest trash can. Basically, just use your common sense, be sensible and be safe.

Please refer to Singapore Government website for more info if you are unsure of the current rules: https://www.gov.sg/infobot?gclid=Cj0KCQjwpNr4BRDYARIsAADIx9z5ObaJ__eEQ_LjIKjlr8ea1vBTN4hlJ3rYULYWaTmEZtH2foUKmnwaAlcLEALw_wcB

We believe in the power of people and of social media, and wouldn’t it be bloody wonderful if in lockdown we didn’t just finish that 1000 piece puzzle, but we also all contributed to removing a large chunk of trash out of our oceans? So come on friends! Let’s do this!

About Seven Clean Seas:

Seven Clean Seas started as a beach clean up community based in Singapore. They were so shocked by the volume of plastic washing up EVERY DAY that they decided to do something about it. Fast forward to today and they organise monthly international coastal clean ups, hold educational talks and informative sessions for remote communities, work with responsible companies and help fellow ocean lovers all over the world do the same.

The Small Print

Lizzy and Sophie (The Conscious Two) will commission Seven Clean Seas at the end of August with the total amount raised. ($5 = 1kg of trash removed from the ocean.) The Conscious Two will update everyone with the amount raised via their Instagram account @theconscioustwo. Seven Clean Seas will then provide a receipt of transaction, stating the amount of trash removed from the oceans for full transparency.
